BREEAM Guide

BREEAM
Launched in 1990, BREEAM is the world’s leading environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. Today, 200,000 buildings have certified BREEAM assessment ratings and over a million more are registered for assessment.

BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation.
A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use.

BREEAM addresses wide-ranging environmental and sustainability issues and enables developers, designers and building managers to demonstrate the environmental credentials of their buildings.

A Certificated BREEAM assessment is delivered by a licensed organisation, using assessors trained under a UKAS accredited competent person scheme, at various stages in a buildings life cycle.

Kingspan Tarec and BREEAM

Within BREEAM 2011 assessment criteria, the specification of Kingspan Tarec products can contribute credits to a buildings overall rating – particularly in the areas of material sourcing (Mat 04 Insulation) and waste (Wst 01 Construction waste management).

Mat 04 Insulation (Mat 06 BREEAM 2008)

Responsible Sourcing Credit

Kingspan Tarec products contribute to the Responsible Sourcing Credit to Environmental Management System (EMS) credits through the two key criteria required for foam insulation – supply chain process and manufacture. One credit is achieved if at least 80%of the thermal insulation used in the building elements is responsibly sourced.

Copies of the relevant EMS Certificates to BS EN ISO 14001:2004 are available via the following links:

Embodied Impact Credit

Kingspan Insulation Limited (KIL) has achieved an A+ Green Guide rating for 35kg/m³ phenolic insulation boards faced with foil facers and tissue facers. Kingspan Tarec Industrial Insulation expects that the Continuous Pipe Lamination manufacturing process at the Glossop site would achieve a similar Green Guide rating. The process to formalise this Green Guide rating has commenced, however the BRE has not yet finalised the assessment methodology of pipe insulation and cannot offer Green Guide ratings for pipe insulation as yet. In the interim, BREEAM Assessors can request a project specific Green Guide rating from the BRE.  KTII considers it highly likely that this project specific rating will be A+.

Wst 01 Construction waste management

Kingspan Tarec provide compliance with Site Waste Management Plans, by offering a ‘zero-landfill, take-back’ scheme where waste product is collected from site and returned for recycling or energy recovery.

Within the BREEAM 2011 credit scheme an ‘Exemplary level’ rating can be achieved by diverting 85% of site waste from landfill. At least one credit from Wst 01 must be achieved to gain an ‘Outstanding level’ rating.
